Regardless of the seriousness of the offense they committed, according to Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, the government is obligated to care for those who are incarcerated. 

The congressman said that, in addition to the amenities provided by the government, the inspection committees should take action to provide extra welfare facilities for prisoners during an event hosted in the Ministry of Justice. 

The minister also emphasized the steps taken to update the nation’s Prison Ordinance in a “humane manner” for the first time since 1934, and he added that 06 units have been built within the current prisons to rehabilitate the death row convicts.
