No power Interruptions as tariffs increased…

As of today (Feb. 16), when the new power tariff revision goes into effect, an uninterrupted power supply will be offered, according to Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera.

Minister Wijesekera added that the President has also ordered him to provide the people with an uninterrupted power supply during a special news conference he held this morning addressing the revision of the electricity rate.

In addition, he claimed that the Bank of Ceylon (BOC) had consented to extend a further loan of Rs. 22 billion for the purchase of coal in exchange for the adjustment of the electricity tariff’s approval. The new electricity pricing revision will therefore go into effect starting today (Feb. 16), according to the Minister.

“It would have been simpler for us if the idea we presented in January had been enacted in January. In spite of any delay, I believe we can guarantee an uninterrupted power supply starting today.

The Minister emphasized that this new system has only been proposed to cover the cost of generating electricity from today after pointing out that several people had attempted to spread rumors that the tariff revision is done in order to cover the previous losses of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
