According to the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB), 67,900 persons were detained nationwide between January and October of last year for drug-related offenses, signaling an alarming surge in the country’s drug use.
In this regard, NDDCB Director-General Bhadrani Senanayake stated that 37% of those detained were detained for cannabis-related charges, while 52% of those detained were detained for heroin possession.
Over these eight months, she said, a total of 6,728 people had been detained with methamphetamine, also known as “Ice.”
