BASL in the say for judiciary independence….

The Premnath Dolawatte MP and Shehan Semasinghe MP and State Minister of Finance made statements regarding a case that is currently pending in the Supreme Court regarding the Local Authorities elections. The Executive Committee of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) declared that these statements constitute an interference with the judicial process and jeopardize the independence of the judiciary in Sri Lanka.

The BASL statement stressed that the judiciary’s independence is a part of the intangible heritage of the Sri Lankan people and that all State institutions must recognize the need for an independent judiciary to ensure that justice is done both among and between individuals.
